Australia requires all visitors to have a visa. I had never had to apply for one before, but it was simple, as long as your phone camera isn't crap.

Start by downloading the app called "Australian ETA," then follow the directions provided by the app. I'd embed the download link here if I knew how, but I don't. Have your passport out, too. You'll use your phone to scan your passport and then take a photo of yourself. This self-portrait was the trickiest part—make sure the background is a solid color.

A typical tourist visa is good for staying up to 3 months, is valid for a year, and costs $20AU. You won't get a response right away, as your application needs to be processed or reviewed or whatever. But in our experience, our applications were granted within an hour. They do take your money first, though. At least they make it easy and offer ApplePay.

Love Kangaroo & Emu, but does Koala feel left out?

We're checking out Auckland for a few days after Sydney, and I realize I have no idea if New Zealand also requires a visa. They probably do. It seems like the kind of country that would, what, with the emphasis on foreign fruit and all. Time to Google.
